What Bass Road is built from
The newer end of north Macon, out along Bass Road and the subdivisions off it. Houses from the 1990s onward, open plans, and a great deal of site-finished hardwood — either laid new or brought back by a crew who sanded and recoated the whole ground floor in a week.

The Bass Road problem
Site-finished floors are the local hazard, and it is the finish rather than the sanding dust that does the damage. A polyurethane floor coating is touch-dry in hours and fully cured in something like a month, and for all of the time in between it is still releasing solvent and still soft enough to mark. Put a rug back down inside that window and three things happen at once. The covered area cannot release the last of its solvent, so it cures differently from the floor around it and the outline of the rug prints itself into the finish as a permanent dull rectangle. The underside of the rug picks the coating up, because jute, cotton and latex all bond happily to a soft finish — what you get is a stiff, matte, faintly tacky skin across the back that then grips dust for the rest of the rug's life. And on a hand-tufted rug the solvent goes straight for the latex layer holding the tufts to the backing, which is the one part of that construction nobody can rebuild. Wait the month out. If the rug has already been down, it needs washing and mechanical cleaning of the backing rather than leaving to see what happens.
