Macon kept its old houses. There is an unusually large stock of intact antebellum and Victorian buildings here, one of the densest concentrations anywhere in the South, and a rug in a plastered 1850s parlour has almost nothing in common with a rug in a 2015 house in Kathleen except the calendar. Put on top of that the two things Middle Georgia lays on a floor every spring — iron-red clay off the Piedmont side of the Fall Line, and a pollen load that turns everything yellow for a month — and a base thirty minutes south that moves households in and out on two- and three-year assignments. Twelve areas, twelve different ways for a rug to come apart. Here is what we usually find once it is lifted.
