Across the Ocmulgee on the bluff in East Macon, laid out over the wooded hills from the 1920s onward. Brick and frame houses on sloping lots under mature pine and oak, within sight of the river and the mounds on the far side of it.

The Shirley Hills problem
There is a week in March when everything on this hill turns yellow, and the reason it matters to a rug is that pine pollen is not dust. Each grain carries a pair of air bladders, which is how it travels in the volume it does, and it is wrapped in a tough waxy outer coat that plain water will not wet. So it arrives in quantities nothing else on the route matches, it sifts straight through a wool pile to the base — too fine to be held by the pile, too light for a domestic vacuum to lift — and once it is down there it does not simply rinse away. Treat it like ordinary soil and the water beads off it; the surface has to be broken with a surfactant before anything else can happen. And it is coloured, so on an ivory field or a pale border it does not read as soil at all, it reads as a yellow cast that owners are certain must be age. It comes in on shoes, on the dog, off the porch furniture, and through the windows that are open for precisely the six weeks the pollen is falling.
