Rugs here are damaged by being moved rather than by being walked on, and what they arrive with are handling injuries. Packing tape gets run straight onto the pile to hold a roll shut, and the adhesive stays in the wool long after the tape has come off — it is oily, it will not release to water, and it collects grit into a dark stripe exactly where the tape ran. Shrink wrap fails the other way: it seals in whatever moisture the rug already had, and the rug then sits wrapped in a truck and a warehouse for weeks. A roll made pile-inward and pulled tight crushes the face against itself and sets a direction into the pile that has to be groomed back out. And a rug folded into the back of a car instead of rolled keeps the crease, which is not a cosmetic problem: a crease in a foundation is a hinge, it flexes at that one line every time somebody crosses it, and eventually the rug splits there. Underneath all of it, a great many of these rugs were bought on an overseas assignment and have never been washed since, so everything each move added is sitting on top of years of soil that was already in the foundation.
