What Kathleen is built from
South Houston County below Warner Robins, along the Highway 127 and 247 corridors. Large subdivisions built from the late 1990s onward on slab, with fenced yards, attached garages and a dog in most of them.
Families, and the rugs live accordingly. This is the highest concentration of pets anywhere on the collection route, and the calls from these streets are overwhelmingly about what the pets have done.
The Kathleen problem
Urine is not a stain, it is three problems arriving at once, which is why household products fail on it so consistently. Fresh, it is mildly acidic. Within a day bacteria break the urea down to ammonia and the spot turns strongly alkaline, and alkali is exactly what lifts a natural dye off wool — that is the colour shift owners find afterwards, a blue gone lilac or a red gone brown, and because it is dye loss rather than soil no amount of further cleaning brings it back. It is corrected by hand or not at all. Second, what dries in the foundation is a crystalline salt, and that salt is hygroscopic: every time the humidity climbs it pulls water back out of the air, reactivates, and the room smells again. That is why a spot dealt with in February announces itself in June. Third, it does not stop at the rug. It soaks through to the pad and the floor beneath, so treating only the face of the rug leaves most of the deposit in place. It has to be flushed right through the foundation in immersion, and the pad usually has to be replaced rather than cleaned.
